A Great Shot Starts with a Perfect Mental Routine
By: Patrick Stephenson
To execute a perfect golf shot, mastering the mental game is just as important to reaching your potential as refining your swing. The process starts as you approach the ball. It’s crucial to be fully present, although it’s unrealistic to think your mind will be completely void of distractions. Thoughts about previous holes or your future score may pop up, but you control whether or not they become a distraction. Acknowledge these thoughts, but shift your focus back to the present moment.
When you reach your ball—whether on the tee box, in the fairway, or on the green—your mental routine should remain consistent, even if your physical approach varies. As you pick a yardage, club, shot shape, or putting line, decisiveness is key. Trust your instincts and be confident in your choice. Confidence in the wrong decision is often better than hesitation toward the right one. Commit fully to the shot you’ve chosen, as doubt can easily undermine any ability you have to execute.
Once you’ve stayed present and made a confident decision, the next step is visualization. This is where many golfers struggle, as it’s easy to picture things going wrong. The trick is to ask yourself the right questions. For example, if you ask yourself, “What would it look like to hit a small draw down the fairway?” your mind will naturally create a vivid image of success. Just as a positive question can help you visualize the shot you want, negative questions can have the opposite effect, so be mindful of your self-talk.
Golf is a tough game, and a sound mental process won’t compensate for poor mechanics. However, it will allow you to maximize your potential, helping you make the most of the swing you have. Next time you play, make an effort to be present and decisive while asking yourself good questions while walking into the ball. Over time you will get better that these disciplines just as your mechanics have gotten better over your journey through the game.
