How much water should you drink while walking a round of golf?

With a major heat wave pushing across the country, golfers need to treat hydration as part of their game plan, not an afterthought. Current reports show extreme heat warnings and advisories across much of the central and eastern U.S., with some areas seeing temperatures in the 95–105°F range and heat index values climbing as high as 115°F. That matters on the golf course because walking 18 holes means several hours in the sun, repeated swings, hills, humidity, and sweat- lots of sweat.
So how much water should you drink?
A good starting point is to begin before you ever reach the first tee. The National Athletic Trainers’ Association recommends consuming about 17–20 ounces of fluid two to three hours before exercise. For golfers, that means drinking water before you leave the house or while you are driving to the course, not waiting until the third hole when you already feel thirsty.
During the round, the key is to sip water consistently instead of waiting until you feel thirsty. Research from sports medicine groups shows that even mild dehydration can
hurt your energy, focus, and performance. A good goal is to avoid losing more than about 2% of your body weight from sweating, because once you get past that point, it can become harder to stay sharp and feel good through the rest of the round.
A practical golf rule: drink a few ounces every hole, or at least every two holes. The Korey Stringer Institute lists a common athlete guideline of about 200–300 mL, roughly 7–10 ounces, every 15 minutes during exercise. Over a four-hour walking round, that can add up quickly, especially in heat and humidity.
On normal days, one large bottle may not be enough. During a heat wave, plan on carrying water, refilling at every chance, and using electrolytes if you are sweating heavily. Watch for warning signs like headache, dizziness, dry mouth, cramps, chills, or sudden loss of focus.
The takeaway is simple: start hydrated, sip consistently, and replace fluids after the round. In this kind of heat, better hydration will not just help you feel better. It may help you play better over the final five holes.
