With the Super Cold Weather, How Do You Stay Golf Ready?

By: Patrick Stephenson

When the temperature drops and the days get shorter, it’s easy to feel like your golf game goes into hibernation. The reality is, winter can actually be a really good time to stay sharp if you shift your focus a little bit. You may not be playing full rounds, but you can still work on the parts of your game that matter most.

For me, it always starts with movement. Cold weather has a way of tightening everything up, and that shows up fast in the golf swing. A few minutes of stretching each day helps keep your shoulders and hips moving the way they should. You don’t need some crazy workout plan either. Just enough to stay loose and keep some rhythm.

Winter is also a good time to slow things down and really look at the basics. Grip, posture, and alignment are things we all think we do well, but they tend to drift during the season. Inside the house or even out in the garage, a few slow practice swings in front of a mirror can go a long way. You’re not trying to rebuild your swing, just keeping the foundation solid so bad habits don’t sneak in.

Putting is another area that doesn’t need warm weather to improve. A simple putting mat and a few minutes here and there helps you keep your start line and speed under control. It’s simple, but it works.

Just as important is staying connected to the game mentally. Watch some golf, think back on what worked last season, and maybe write down a few goals for when the weather breaks. Winter doesn’t have to mean starting over. If you keep things simple and consistent, you’ll be more ready than you think when it’s time to tee it up again.
